MAI Designation - Appraisal Institute
The MAI membership designation is held by appraisers who are experienced in the valuation and
evaluation of commercial, industrial, residential and other types of properties, and who advise
clients on real estate investment decisions.
The current requirements for the MAI designation are:
–Pass rigorous education requirements (200 credit hours)
–Pass a final comprehensive examination
–Submit specialized experience which must meet strict criteria
–Receive credit for the demonstration of knowledge requirement
–Conduct his or her professional activities in accordance with the Appraisal Institute's Code of Professional Ethics and are subject to a peer review process, which enforces the Code of Professional Ethics
–Appraisal Institute MAI Designated members are required to adhere to strict continuing education requirements to ensure they are up-to-date with the evolving real estate field.
SR/WA Designation - International Right of Way Association
The Senior Right of Way Professional (SR/WA), is the most prestigious professional designation granted to those right of way professionals who have achieved professional status through experience, education, and examination. While the SR/WA professional may be a specialist in one area, they must also be familiar with all disciplines associated with the right of way profession. The SR/WA designation is the only designation reflecting evidence of professional accomplishment in the right of way profession.
The current requirements for the SR/WA designation are:
– Achievement of the Right of Way Professional Certification or its equivalent
– Minimum 5 years of qualifying experience in a right of way related practice
– Bachelor's Degree in U.S. or University Degree
– Complete 208 Credit Units of course work over numerous disciplines within the right of way profession
– Complete the International Right of Way Ethics Course
– Successfully complete a Capstone Comprehensive Examination covering multiple disciplines within the Right of Way profession
R/W-AC Certification - International Right of Way Association
The Right of Way Certification is granted to IRWA members who have achieved professional status through experience, education and examination in a single right of way discipline. Earning this certification demonstrates an unparalleled achievement in a single
discipline and reinforces a standard of excellence.
Criteria include:
– Member in good standing
– Appraisal Experience. Must have a minimum of 2 years of relevant Right of Way professional experience within the past 5 years.
– Experience in the appraisal of partial takings involving severance or consequential damages or injuries affection and working knowledge of expropriation or eminent domain law and procedures; or,
– Full time professional services making economic studies and feasibility analyses when such services involve interpretation of real estate valuation principles.
– IRWA Course work Requirements
To obtain the R/W certification, the candidate must successfully complete a course work requirement that consists of IRWA core (72 credit hours), elective (32 credit hours), and ethics (8 credit hours) educational courses.
–Capstone Examination Requirements:
The candidate must fulfill the capstone examination requirement for the discipline within which they are applying.
